Welcome! You've come this far and I'm so glad. You're one of the reasons I paint.
I start my paintings by creating chaos – marks and smears that are spontaneous and beautiful all on their own. Then I build energy with color and line and then I create content.
Sometimes the content is an image and sometimes just strong beauty – color and texture, light and dark.
My work does not have a philosophical message, it is purely the paint, the colors, the texture, the surprises.
Often it is my agony, when I fight with the paint and try to control it, and often it is my pleasure, that I offer up with a completed piece. A degree of control comes late into the process – when I finally see where it really can go. I am surprised! It is rarely what I thought it might be.
Technique? I try not to have one but yes there are tools I use again and again, and it seems the paint teases me every time. Sometimes it is slicker, sometimes dryer and I must respond accordingly.
Lessons to my freedom – that's what it is and what I share. This is my way and perhaps it will offer you a thought into what might be the direction for you. But mostly I want you to enjoy, enjoy.
I want to create art that you will look at again and again. I want to create a painting that draws you in to look closely to see the mystery of its creation. I want you to feel the pleasure and the joy of original art still warm with creative vibration.
I am Asheville, North Carolina artist, Nan Davis. I was born in Greenville, South Carolina and lived there until I was 18. My Bachelor of Fine Art is from Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia.
