Paint Out Loud...the story behind the art

Light and Dark, it says it all

I'm always on the lookout for new places to paint, new sky, new trees and I am always drawn to the dramatic.
We see because of light and dark.  Too much of either one and you lose detail and dimension and I feel that light and dark is very important in my paintings.
This reflection scene was perfect when I saw it. I felt it would be an exciting painting.  I started with a photo of the scene, now for my interpretation.
That is the fun part - to use elements from an actual scene and make it mine.
Oil paint is my favorite medium - but what a mess.  I get covered all over - hair, face, even under the gloves I wear - but I love it.

I never worry about capturing the reflection perfectly, just the essence.  I am not a mathematician for sure. I want you to feel the shimmer of the water reflection, to enjoy the colors from the trees and light and darks reflected.
This is a large canvas which makes it even more fun for me.  There was plenty of room on the canvas for me to smear and brush and scrape.  And the paint and marks and scrapes began to take on a life.  I love the light peaking through the trees, and where the reflection in the water has such wonderful changes.  I really enjoyed painting this.
Light and Dark - that is what it is all about.
